Small Amps - Great Sound (Part 2)

By Andy | November 27, 2008

Ok I think I’m getting closer with the amp, but as ever I’ve been thinking a little too hard about what I want and inevitably I’ve gone down the ‘what if it could do this route’.

What I want is to prove a point. I’ve come to the conclusion recently that most guitar players in church only need about 7-8 watts in a small, easy to carry and great sounding tube amp which they can change sounds and colour with a few well chosen pedals. A well built 7 watt tube amp can compete with a drummer and be driven hard enough at church volumes to sound like it should without the sound man, backing vocalists and Pastor all saying ‘can you turn it down please?’ So many of us have bough the amp of our dreams only to find we can just about turn it up to 1.5 in the worship band. Chord of the Month - EmM7

By Steve Weeks | November 26, 2008

Lets be fashionable and topical with the “James Bond” chord - EmM7

emm7

EM7 with a BIG M is an abbreviation for Maj7, as opposed to E7 So impress your friends with E minor Major 7!
In the Real Book, they write a triangle for Maj7
Em7 would mean E Minor with a flat 3rd and a flat7
EmM7 therefore might mean the James Bond Chord which is not really much practical use, but cool to know and great to help you understand a little more about 7ths.

So next month we’ll do something a but more worship related….promise!

How to Become a Confident Singer

By Marie Page | November 25, 2008

Vocals singer

Confidence is really crucial in effective vocals performance. When we are under confident we tend not to breathe as well as we should and also not to really nail the notes that strongly, so it all comes out a bit mushy. Now at Musicademy we’ve taken a fairly in-depth approach to helping worship vocalists through our vocals DVDs, so of course we would recommend going through them or alternatively getting some private lessons to help you on your specific issues, but here are some brief tips: Read More »

The Conscious Competence Learning Model

By Marie Page | November 18, 2008

As music teachers we find it helpful to be aware of the learning model that defines students as at one of four stages:
Stage 1 unconscious incompetence
Stage 2 conscious incompetence
Stage 3 conscious competence
Stage 4 unconscious competence
The model explains the process and stages of learning a new skill

Beginners or Intermediate DVDs?

By Marie Page | November 9, 2008

Here’s a question from Dale in the US which I’ve posted as it comes up all the time.

“I am a self-taught guitar player for the last ten years. i don’t know anything about music theory or some of the more technical terms i hear about and read on your guitar courses. I have led worship at churches i have attended, but find myself lacking in some areas. i have seen your guitar courses on worshiptogether.com, but am really unsure whether i should purchase the beginner or intermediate course. i don’t want to go to something so basic that it was a waste of my money, but don’t want to miss out on things i need to know by jumping to the intermediate course. how basic or beginner is your beginner course? i know most of my major chords, can transpose with a capo, and know a couple of strum patterns, but have an issue with tempo and lack in moving up the neck and fingerpicking. any advice on what i should purchase?”
